# Set up Down Field

Down Field is a remote MCP server that gives you read access to the user's Sleeper and ESPN
fantasy football leagues and NFL data: rosters, matchups, scores, player stats, forecasts, and
lineup, waiver and trade analysis. It works in ChatGPT, Claude, Grok and Muse, and in any client
that supports remote MCP with OAuth.

Use this guide when the user asks you to add Down Field to the app you're running in. If they only
asked what Down Field is, explain it and offer to set it up; don't start adding it.

## The values

| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Name | Down Field |
| Server URL | `https://api.downfield.app/mcp` |
| Transport | Streamable HTTP |
| Authentication | OAuth 2.1 with PKCE (S256) |
| Client ID (Muse only) | `UYqBimGorjiEGrUdJhiNpghTGgQOPOqz` (public, not a secret; registered for Muse's callback, so it works only in Muse) |
| Client secret | None. Leave it blank. |
| Sign-in | https://accounts.downfield.app (email code or passkey; no account needed first) |

## How to do it

You know this app better than we do, and apps move their menus often. Work it out from your own
documentation, built-in tools and current context first. The per-app notes further down are a
fallback, last checked on the date shown, and may be out of date.

1. **Work out where you are:** which app, and which surface (website, desktop app or phone app).
Some apps can add connectors only on one surface or on some plans.
2. **If the user asked you to add it and you can do that yourself** (for example, by opening the
app's add-connector form), do it with the values above. Leave the client ID blank unless you
are Muse. Most apps register themselves; if another app insists on a client ID, see "Any other
   MCP client" below.
3. **Otherwise, walk the user through it** one step at a time, and wait for them to confirm each
step. Don't invent a menu path. If you aren't sure, tell them what to look for: words like
Connectors, Apps, Plugins, Integrations, MCP or Custom connector.
4. **If this app or surface can't add a custom connector,** say so plainly and give the next best
option: another surface (say, the website on a computer), the plan or setting that unlocks it,
or adding leagues on the website at https://accounts.downfield.app/connections.
5. **The user signs in themselves** when the app opens Down Field's sign-in page, then approves
access. Ask them to tell you when that's done. They may need to start a new chat before the
   tools appear.

## After it's connected

Call `get_started`. It reports whether leagues are linked, the user's team in each league, saved
preferences and the next step. Follow its steps in order:

1. **Sleeper:** ask for their exact Sleeper username (not their display name) and call
   `follow_sleeper`.
2. **ESPN:** call `open_connections` and give them its ESPN link. They sign in to ESPN on the Down
Field website, then come back and ask you to continue.
3. **Choose leagues:** if several come back, confirm which ones and call
`select_connection_leagues`. Syncing can take a moment; `get_connections` shows progress.
4. **Confirm their team** in each league if `get_started` couldn't tell.
5. **Preferences:** ask how hands-on they want you to be, their risk posture and which check-ins
they want, and save them with `save_preferences`. Every app they use sees the same setup.

If their message asked a question after setup (it may end with "Then answer:"), answer it once the
leagues are linked. Otherwise offer a first question that fits their week, such as "Who should I
start this week?". `ask_downfield` explains what Down Field can do.

From then on, follow Down Field's own guidance. The server sends a tool map as its MCP
instructions, and it serves task skills as MCP resources: `skill://downfield/downfield/SKILL.md`
(the tool map) plus `fantasy-data`, `league-research`, `trade-ideas`, `waiver-wire`,
`week-in-review` and `weekly-review` under `skill://downfield/<name>/SKILL.md`. Read the one
that matches the task.

## Ground rules

- Down Field gives advice only. It never sets a lineup, submits a waiver claim, or proposes or
accepts a trade. The user makes every move in their own fantasy app.
- You can't sign in for the user. They sign in to Down Field themselves, with their email.
- Never ask for a Sleeper or ESPN password or verification code in chat, and never put one in a
tool argument. ESPN sign-in happens only on the secure Down Field website, through the link Down
  Field returns.
- Every number you give comes from a Down Field tool. If data is missing or stale, say so.

## Fallback notes by app (last checked 2026-10-24)

Use these only if your own knowledge of the app doesn't settle it. Manual steps for people are at
https://downfield.app/connect.

- **Claude:** Down Field is in the Claude directory (https://claude.ai/directory/down-field); choose Connect.
Otherwise add a custom connector with the server URL.
- **ChatGPT:** desktop only, on the website, not the phone app. If the add option is missing, turn
on Developer mode (Settings, then Security and login, or Settings, then Apps). On the Plugins
page (https://chatgpt.com/plugins), add a custom MCP server named Down Field with the server URL
and OAuth, install it, sign in, then choose Down Field from the chat's tools. Some plans and
workspaces block custom connectors. If the user is on a phone, tell them to open chatgpt.com on a
computer and paste the same message there.
- **Grok:** on the Connectors page (https://grok.com/connectors), choose New Connector, then
Custom, paste the server URL, name it Down Field and choose OAuth. On a phone the website is more
reliable than the app. On Business and Enterprise plans, an admin adds the connector first.
- **Muse:** Muse adds custom connectors from the chat. Open its Add custom connector form, fill in
the server URL and the client ID above, then choose Add.
- **Any other MCP client:** add a remote server with the URL above and choose OAuth. Clients that
register themselves need no client ID. If yours requires one, email support@downfield.app with
the client's name and callback URL.

## If something goes wrong

- **No Down Field tools appear:** make sure the connector is turned on for this chat, then start a
new chat. Some apps load tools only when a chat begins.
- **Sign-in fails or expires:** remove and re-add the connector, then sign in again.
- **A league is empty or out of date:** check `get_connections`. ESPN may need the user to sign in
again on the Down Field website.
- **Anything else:** see https://downfield.app/help, or call `send_feedback` with the user's own
  words. Support is support@downfield.app.
